Travel & Holiday

The Best Destination for the Traveller & Vacationer Duo

Let’s be honest; there’s a difference between a Traveller and a Vacationer. Travellers relish new experiences and the thrill of adventure, while vacationers prefer to unwind and relax away from home. However, what happens when you and your significant other have opposing travel preferences? This is the situation SM (my significant other), and I find ourselves in.

If you happen to be in a similar situation, you would surely empathise with my struggle in planning an itinerary for our trip to Taiwan last May. While SM was content with staying in Taipei for the entirety of our stay, having lived there for six months myself, I knew that I was ready to explore other regions. However, the idea of travelling to the southern part of Taiwan was beginning to take a toll on my beloved Vacationer. Then, I stumbled upon this hidden gem of a location – Hualien.

A Cocktail Mix of Exploration & Relaxation

Hualien, located in Taiwan, is ideal for those seeking a harmonious mix of adventure and tranquillity. This region is home to an abundance of enchanting natural marvels that will leave visitors spellbound. The landscapes here are varied and striking, ranging from majestic peaks to breathtaking coastlines. Unlike bustling cities like Taipei or Kaohsiung, Hualien is a place where you can unwind and let go of the stresses of everyday life, allowing you to reconnect with your inner self and find peace.

Amazing hospitality options

Hualien provides numerous fantastic options for hospitality that cater to the various preferences of travellers and vacationers. Whether you prefer farm stays, hostels, inns, homestays, Airbnb rentals, minsu, or hostels, a wide range of accommodations are available. We stick to a budget-friendly hotel that provides complimentary bike rentals. The Finders Hotel – Hualien Datong is a great option for us, mainly because it’s conveniently located near all the necessary amenities for those who don’t drive. With the train station just a 10-minute bus ride and the bus stop just a 2-minute walk away, we can easily explore Hualien County in a breeze.

The Favourite Transportation Tool for Vacationers & Travellers

When looking for a great travel experience that meets the needs of both adventurous travellers and leisure-seeking vacationers, the options can sometimes feel restricted. Walking by foot may be exhausting for the adventurous traveller, while driving in a car could dampen the enjoyment for the laid-back vacationer. Thankfully, there is a solution that combines the best of both worlds: the humble bike. It’s a mode of transportation that allows you to fully explore a new city like Hualien at your own pace.

With a reliable bike, the city becomes more accessible and invites you to explore its treasures. Unlike driving, cycling lets you connect with your surroundings, inhale the atmosphere, and come across enchanting alleys and undiscovered gems you may have overlooked otherwise. As you ride through Datong’s roads, you feel fully immersed, catching a glimpse of the peaceful and genuine lives of the residents and creating unforgettable memories that stay with you long after your adventure concludes.

Now, imagine a stay at Finders Hotel – Hualien Datong, a place where hospitality embraces the spirit of exploration. Unlike traditional accommodations, Finders Hotel offers complimentary bike rentals to all guests, complete with safety helmets and locks for your peace of mind. Whether you’re a daring Traveller seeking thrilling escapades or a Vacationer in pursuit of serene moments, Finders Hotel provides the perfect foundation for an unforgettable experience in Hualien.

Beyond the majestic cliffs and lush greenery lies a hidden gem that adds an extra layer of charm to this unmissable destination – a little open space café run by indigenous people.

To reach this tucked-away café (綠夢森林手沖咖啡), one must embark on a captivating journey along the Shakadang Trail. The hike spans approximately 1.5 hours, inviting you to traverse narrow passages and climb gentle slopes while immersing yourself in the untouched allure of Taroko Gorge. Our Conversation with The Cafe Owner

In a heartfelt conversation with the café’s boss, he shared the incredible tale of dedicating four years to construct this oasis from scratch. With unwavering passion, he utilised stones sourced from the nearby river. He transported hefty blocks into the mountains by bike, crafting a space that harmoniously blends with the gorge’s natural splendour.

This cosy café has a limited capacity of only 12 individuals at a time. This ensures a peaceful and individualized experience for every guest who has the chance to discover it. Even though the menu mainly consists of drinks and small snacks, the boss is generous enough to allow people with discerning palates to enjoy homemade meals by making a reservation three days in advance. Every dish is thoughtfully prepared using only natural ingredients, emphasising a commitment to authenticity and flavours derived from the bountiful offerings of nature. The café is committed to providing an environmentally-friendly and pure dining experience. They serve guests water that is directly drawn from the pristine Liwu River.

    The unexpected Narnia

This hidden café is a treasure trove of delight for travellers and vacationers seeking to satiate their appetites and wanderlust. Imagine sipping on a locally sourced beverage or savouring a wholesome snack surrounded by the awe-inspiring vistas of Taroko Gorge. The air is filled with the melodies of the gorge’s inhabitants – the chirping of birds and the soothing hum of the river below – all while being warmly welcomed into the culture and hospitality of the indigenous people.

As the café boss shared his journey and passion for creating this unique space, guests are invited to connect on a deeper level with the essence of Taroko Gorge. The café transforms into more than just a spot for meals and beverages. It becomes a conduit for tales, an opportunity to experience customs, and an invitation to admire the beauty of the gorge in a fresh way.
